A young boy who lost his arm to a soviet mine stands in front of one of the thousands of tanks that litter the Panjsher Valley. The Soviets scattered colorful 'butterfly' mines by air which effectively attracted the curious.

There are millions of landmines scattered across Afghanistan that will ensure a legacy of mutilation for generations to come. When war is over, the soldiers go home, but the landmines remain.
There are a number of demining groups that lead a galliant effort to remove these instruments of war forever. I had the opportunity to accompany members from the HALO Trust who were working on a demining project in the Shomali Plains, just north of Kabul.
