A young boy who lost his arm to a soviet mine stands in front of one of
the thousands of tanks that litter the Panjsher Valley. The Soviets
scattered colorful 'butterfly' mines by air which effectively attracted the
curious.

 

~ Landmines in Afghanistan ~

There are millions of landmines scattered across Afghanistan that
will ensure a legacy of mutilation for generations to come. When
war is over, the soldiers go home, but the landmines remain.

There are a number of demining groups that lead a galliant effort to
remove these instruments of war forever. I had the opportunity to
accompany members from the
HALO Trust who were working
on a demining project in the Shomali Plains, just north of Kabul.
